Department of Translation, Terminology & Interpreting Studies

About us

About us

Our department offers postgraduate courses and doctoral research supervision in two main areas of study, namely Translation and Interpreting, and also provides training and research in the field of Terminology.

In Translation Studies, the theoretical and practical aspects involved in audiovisual, technical and literary translation are discussed within a wider context involving content writing, publishing, localisation, intercultural communication, project management, communications and media.

The programme caters for a wide range of students who wish to acquire a critical understanding of contemporary issues in translation alongside the practical skills required in today’s fast-evolving translation industry. Versatility and employability are thus enhanced.

Translation training is offered from English to Maltese, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Chinese. Arabic is also offered subject to trainer availability.

In 2019, the Master in Translation & Terminology Studies Course was admitted as a member of the prestigious European Masters in Translation (EMT) network by the Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission.

The Master in Interpreting Studies is a practice-based programme that focuses primarily on conference interpreting for the European Union. It prepares students for the interinstitutional accreditation test, which enables interpreters to work at the European institutions. The first language in this programme is Maltese and the students' proficiency in Maltese and their additional languages will be assessed though an aptitude test.

Recent graduates have found work as freelance/in-house translators and interpreters for EU institutions, but thanks to the transferable skills acquired during the course, graduates have also found employment in fields such as marketing, public relations, human resources, public administration and management.

The department also welcomes doctoral dissertation proposals. Our experienced and qualified academic staff members can provide supervision in the following areas: terminology, technical translation, literary translation, audiovisual translation, and media accessibility.

The department is an academic partner of Phrase, RWS, Ooona, and ZOOdigital providing our students with the technological tools required for their training in translation, terminology management and localisation.
