Study-Unit Description

CODE EBI5001

TITLE Introduction to Entrepreneurship

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 10

DEPARTMENT Centre for Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation

DESCRIPTION The study-unit is broken down into three sections.

In the first section, session 1.1 introduces entrepreneurship, what it takes to be an entrepreneur and what benefits entrepreneurship can bring; session 1.2 explains the key activity of all entrepreneurs – the ability to sell products and services at a profit; session 1.3 looks at the main business structures within which all entrepreneurs operate and session 1.4 brings all of what precedes into context and illustrates how graduates can follow an entrepreneurial career path.

In the second section, session 1.5 explains the risk reduction methods that entrepreneurs use to protect innovative ideas and why a knowledge of intellectual property is important for all business models; session 1.6 introduces the critical concept of market research as the next step in risk reduction and business planning; session 1.7 builds on this planning theme by explaining how entrepreneurs develop a business plan and its associated cash flow forecast budget whilst session 1.8 explains how entrepreneurs find the resources that they need prior to launching a business.

In the third section, session 1.9 explains common techniques used by entrepreneurs to launch a new business venture whilst session 1.10 details how entrepreneurs define, manage and reduce risk once the business has been launched. As part of risk mitigation understanding, the session also explains the additional areas of knowledge and skills (not covered in this module) that are required to be successful in business - this forms an important ‘bridge’ to the other modules that follow in the course.
