| DESCRIPTION | Through a series of communicative task-based activities, participants will improve their language systems in order to enable them to understand and express themselves adequately prior to starting or while enrolled in a course of study at the University of Malta. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to improve participants’ ability to understand written and spoken English as well as express themselves more accurately, fluently and confidently in English at university. The main foci are grammar and vocabulary development, along with academic style and convention. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the main features of writing in English; - Select vocabulary appropriate to context and task from within the academic register; - Identify different aspects of English grammar; - Develop a broader range of vocabulary. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Write texts in English with more accuracy; - Express themselves in English with a higher degree of confidence; - Communicate more effectively in English in an academic context; - Read and listen to academic texts with a better degree of understanding.
