| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit develops students' knowledge and skills in relation to reflective writing. Besides focusing on the main models and approaches, sessions enable students to master the key skills pertinent to different kinds of reflective writing. Students learn how to take notes for effective retrieval, use language skills relevant to fluency and intelligibility, and prepare personal writing for formal assessment. The main foci of learning are the writing process, and the ability to employ a systematic approach that enhances the reflective qualities of a piece of writing. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims are: - to develop knowledge and skills related to reflective writing; - to equip students with writing skills that can be applied to any individual area of study; - to improve fluency, intelligibility and effectiveness in conveying the key elements of a message. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - identify some of the main models in relation to reflective writing; - identify the difference between compiling effective and less effective notes for later retrieval; - balance a range of simple and complex grammar structures in effectively conveying a message; - access, identify and make use of a good range of vocabulary in order to nuance and refine their writing; - develop enough critical awareness of written language to accurately edit and rewrite their own work. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - use different models when engaging in reflective writing; - retrieve important information from notes, and organise this into coherent writing; - critically assess their own written work in terms of accuracy and effectiveness; - edit, reorganise and format reflective writing for a targeted readership (examiners; supervisors; case-study meetings etc.) Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Resources will be made available by the lecturer teaching on this study-unit. |
