DESCRIPTION Through a cycle of fluency- and accuracy-based communicative tasks and roles, participants will directly experience and learn to use a range of strategies, skills and language patterns, in order to ensure more effective spoken and written communication in English, required when following a course of study at University.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to improve participants’ ability to express themselves more effectively, particularly when participating in discussions, tutorials and delivering presentations, and writing essays and articles. The main foci are fluency development and writing skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify a variety of language and sentence patterns;
- Describe and select a range of communicative registers in spoken and written contexts;
- Identify strategies to communicate and express themselves effectively in an academic context.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Write texts in English more effectively;
- Engage in discourse in English;
- Apply an appropriate register depending on the demands of a given situation.
