DESCRIPTION The study-unit is designed to address problems of English proficiency at undergraduate level; provide language support that may be useful to the students' undergraduate studies; improve written and spoken grammar accuracy.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to improve the students' level of proficiency in English.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- broaden their range of sentence structure varying in complexity;
- improve their knowledge of the structure of English;
- work with a variety of text types;
- review their basic organisational strategies;
- discern the subtleties and effectiveness of punctuation;
- identify the function of, and write effective, topic sentences;
- identify and correct errors in their own writing.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- write a text using a variety of complex sentence patterns;
- use appropriate verb tense according to section type;
- punctuate accurately and effectively;
- use cohesive devices to link paragraphs, and ideas throughout a piece of writing
- improve note-taking and paraphrasing skills;
- write effective topic sentences and appropriate supporting sentences;
- edit their own writing.

Students will be made aware of resource material they can make use of individually to improve their grasp of the language on an ongoing basis.
