Antoinette Camilleri Grima graduated B.Ed. (Hons.) from the University of Malta, and M.Sc. in Applied Linguistics and Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh. She has taught and researched the area of applied linguistics with special reference to the teaching of Maltese as L1, and as a foreign language. She edited and authored books and chapters in books about the teaching of Maltese, taught Maltese in Brussels to EU translators, and produced/authored two radio series teaching Maltese as a foreign language.

She contributed to the international programme of the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe by co-ordinating projects dealing with Intercultural Competence, and edited, co-edited and authored a number of ECML publications. She worked as part of an international team which produced 'A Framework of reference for pluralistic approaches to languages and cultures' which was published by the European Centre for Modern Language of the Council of Europe as part of their Language Policy in Education, and is promoted by the European Commission.

Prof Camilleri Grima has researched and published widely in the area of bilingualism in education. She is a regular invited lecturer at the University of Strasbourg, the University of Antwerp, the University of Udine, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Limerick, Ireland.

She has also contributed to Gender studies by the European Institute for Gender Equality, such as 'A study of collected narratives on gender perceptions in the 27 EU Member States' (2013).
