As the Pro-Rector for Student & Staff Affairs and Outreach, Prof. Sammut's responsibilities include the implementation of the University's Strategy in relation to societal impact and chairing the University's Equity Committee, tasked with implementing the Equity Plan. She also holds teaching positions within the Department of Media and Communications and the Department of International Relations, where she previously served as the Head of Department. Her academic background includes a PhD in Media and Communications from Goldsmiths College, University of London, with her research and teaching interests span journalism, international communications, political communication, and gender studies. During the period of 2017-2020, she led a technical committee instrumental in introducing affirmative measures, culminating in Constitutional changes and the establishment of a Gender Corrective Mechanism that increased women's representation in the Maltese Parliament. Subsequently, between 2022-23, she was appointed to a media experts committee by the government to deliberate on legal reforms in the field. Additionally, in 2021 she briefly served in the role of Chair at the Public Broadcasting Services, where her career in journalism had commenced in the early 1980s.
