Dr Żammit is a lecturer and researcher in Maltese Pedagogy, with a specialisation in the teaching of Maltese as a foreign language. She holds a PhD in the acquisition of Maltese as a foreign language, a Masters of Arts Degree with Distinction in Maltese Linguistics and a First Class B.Ed (Hons) Degree in Maltese and Early and Middle Years from the University of Malta. Prior to joining the University of Malta's Department of Languages and Humanities in Education, Dr Żammit had more than fifteen years of pedagogical experience working with Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary schools and academic institutions in teaching Maltese as a first and foreign language, as well as Spanish as a foreign language.
Dr. Żammit works as a researcher and design consultant in the field of teaching and learning Maltese as a foreign language. She taught Second Language Acquisition pedagogies and introduced Maltese as a foreign language at several universities, including the Universities of Edinburgh, Cork, and Antwerp. She is currently publishing articles in refereed journals, presenting at conferences, and writing books about Maltese as a Foreign Language. Dr Żammit’s areas of specialization and research interests include second language acquisition, Maltese as a foreign language, computer assisted language learning (CALL), interlanguage, interculturalism, plurilingualism, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, cross-cultural communication and adult education.
Alongside her academic endeavours, Dr. Żammit is a reviewer for the Routledge Taylor & Francis "Journal of Research of Technology in Education" (JRTE) and "Computer Assisted Language Learning", and the Springer Nature "Journal Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education". Furthermore, she holds the position of Associate Editor for Springer Nature's "Humanities & Social Sciences Communications" journal. Through these roles, she applies her expertise to ensure the quality of research in these fields. While research constitutes a significant part of Dr. Żammit's work, she also dedicates time to regular teaching, coordinating the pedagogy of Maltese, teaching practice visits, coordinating work on the 'Il-Ġabra' online dictionary, writing short fictional graded stories, and supervising Master's students.
