DESCRIPTION The study-unit will introduce the students to the dietetic process and will highlight the fundamental principles of dietetics and provide students with key elements associated with dietetic practice. The study-unit will include the theory and dietetic interventions appropriate in common pathologies encountered in dietetic practice as well as the use of dietetic products which can compliment the dietetic intervention.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide the students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary for the practice of dietetics. The unit will also introduce the process of evidence-based practice in dietetic intervention of common medical conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the role of the dietitian;
- Comprehend the principles of the dietetic process;
- Rationalize the use of different anthropometric measurements;
- Discuss clinical biochemistry results in relation to different medical conditions;
- Clinically identify physical signs and symptoms which will impact the dietetic intervention;
- Demonstrate an understanding of dietary assessment; and
- Discuss dietetic interventions for common medical conditions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Go through the dietetic process to elicit all information needed to give an appropriate dietetic care;
- Assess and calculate nutritional requirements for different ages, and different medical conditions; and
- Plan and give rational for dietetic care in basic dietetic consultations.
