DESCRIPTION Disorders of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems are common and are encountered by nurses in every setting from the community to the intensive care unit. This study unit introduces students to various disorders of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, their underlying pathophysiology and the associated treatment modalities, with particular emphasis on the nursing management of patients with such disorders. Furthermore, this study-unit introduces students to the general peri-operative nursing management of patients undergoing surgery, as well as provides an introduction to oncology and pain management.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology in relation to disorders of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems;
- To familiarise students with the nursing management of patients with various disorders of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems;
- To introduce students to general peri-operative nursing care of patients undergoing surgery;
- To introduce students to the concept of pain management;
- To introduce students to cancer and nursing individuals with cancer.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- To utilise information from lecture notes and supplementary readings to describe the nursing management of patients with various disorders of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems during a final exam;
- To utilise information from lecture notes and supplementary readings to describe the general nursing care of patients undergoing surgery during a final exam;
- To utilise information from lecture notes and supplementary readings to describe the concepts of pain management, and oncology and palliative care during a final exam.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- To provide holistic care to patients with various disorders of the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems from admission to an acute hospital setting until discharge;
- To provide holistic care to patients undergoing surgery over the continuum of the peri-operative period.
