TITLE Practical Nursing Skills 1

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Nursing

DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce the student to clinical skills associated with nursing practice. Key principles of monitoring, diagnosis and interventions are integrated with fundamental principles of patient safety and patient-centred care. This study-unit will enable students to begin to develop their knowledge and practical clinical skills in order to make effective clinical decisions. Theoretical lectures, practical workshop sessions and virtual learning environments are combined to create a comprehensive and varied learning experience.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to develop a sound body of theoretical underpinnings in relation to a number of practical nursing skills, according to the latest evidence. Implement such skills safely in a simulated clinical environment under the supervision of a trained instructor and apply theoretical underpinnings to skills involved in nursing care delivery. Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to critically reflect on the performance of skills and their translation in a real clinical environment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate a range of clinical skills and their relevant theoretical background in a supervised simulated environment;
- Discuss with tutors and instructors the theoretical background supporting the relevant practical nursing skills;
- Evaluate and Implement feedback from practical workshops;
- Adapting and modifying clinical skills based on the principles of patient-centred care and patient safety.

2. Skills:
Under the supervision of a clinical instructor, students will be able to demonstrate skills in relation to

- infection prevention and control and asepsis;
- monitoring and documenting basic physiological measurements;
- providing assistance and care with oral and enteral feeding;
- providing care in relation to bathing and dressing;
- providing assistance and care in relation to urinary and faecal elimination, including the accurate collection of specimens and ostomy care;
- monitoring and evaluating basic physiological measurements;
- providing accurate and relevant handover and documentation.
