DESCRIPTION This study-unit has been designed to provide health professionals with the theoretical knowledge and skills required to deliver first aid in an emergency situation. Throughout the study-unit a wide range of simulated emergency scenarios will be provided to help participants learn and retain valuable skills which are required to deal with emergency situations in both clinical and non-clinical settings, using simple first aid and emergency equipment.

The study-unit is designed around the three aims of emergency care, namely preserving life, preventing worsening of the condition and promoting recovery, which determine the objectives to be met during the course.

Unit content:
1. Principles of first aid and emergency care
2. Casualty assessment
3. Altered level of consciousness
4. Sudden cardiac arrest
5. Sudden illness
6. Bleeding, shock and serious trauma
7. Environmental emergencies
8. Serious incidents and multiple casualty incidents
9. Casualty moving and handling

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are:
- To introduce participants to the principles of emergency care for sudden illness and serious injury leading to hypoxia, shock and problems with thermoregulation;
- To instruct students in the basic emergency skills required to assess, establish and maintain adequate ventilatory, circulatory and neurological status in a seriously ill or injured person, and environmental control;
- To instruct participants in the use of simple emergency equipment which can be accessible and useful in emergency situations requiring first aid.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define an emergency situation, and discuss the provision of first aid in view of the three aims of emergency care.
- Discuss the roles of the professional first aider in an emergency situation and the chain of help.
- Discuss the development of a clinical emergency with regards to airway, breathing and circulatory compromise.
- Describe the appropriate first aid actions for specific emergency conditions discussed during the course.
- Describe the appropriate actions in a serious incident and an incident involving multiple casualties.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assess an emergency situation quickly and calmly;
- Protect the first aider, bystanders and casualties from any danger;
- Assess the condition of all casualties and identify the need for immediate care;
- Administer appropriate care for life-threatening injuries relative to airway, breathing and circulation;
- Use simple first aid and emergency equipment safely and effectively in the delivery of first aid.
