TITLE A Toolkit for Thinking Out of the Box

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, participants will be provided with new tools which they can use to improve their own thinking and to develop their potential for creative thinking. Some of the key points that will be covered in this study-unit include:
- Learning and using different thinking techniques which include, but are not limited to, perception-broadening tools, SCAMPER, Lateral Thinking, Random Word, SWOT and PEST analysis;
- Lateral Thinking in Practice;
- Use of various thinking techniques in situations involving decision making, communication and design – Practical Sessions.

The emphasis of this study-unit is on the active participation of the students who will be provided with opportunities to practice individually and in groups all the tools learnt.

Study-Unit Aims:

By the end of this study-unit, students will be able to move beyond a general willingness to be creative and develop the ability to use thinking tools deliberately based on their assessment of the thinking required by the situation. This unit aims to provide students with an opportunity tol learn and practice thinking tools that will allow them to broaden their perception and improve their critical and creative thinking abilities.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain the importance of deliberate use of tools to aid thinking;
- Discuss the relevance of improving their thinking for their personal and professional lives;
- Describe and explain the thinking tools covered in the study-unit;
- Demonstrate and evaluate the use of appropriate thinking tools applied to different contexts.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study unit students will be able to:
- Examine their own assumptions and values about the application of thinking tools to improve their thinking;
- Evaluate scenarios through the application of thinking tools;
- Generate new ideas through the deliberate application of thinking tools;
- Develop an action plan and make recommendations for idea implementation based on the process of the deliberate application of the thinking tools;
- Produce an in-depth project, demonstrating competency in the application of the thinking tools learnt.
