CODE IOT1010

TITLE Introduction to Entrepreneurship

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT The Edward de Bono Institute for Creative Thinking and Innovation

DESCRIPTION The study-unit starts with a discussion to define entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship, focusing primarily on exploring entrepreneurial theory and dispelling common misconceptions about the subject. Foremost among these is the misunderstanding that entrepreneurship is limited to starting up and running a business, and that it is purely a personality trait. Entrepreneurship is a mindset, or as the European Commission refers to it, a ‘key competence for life’; it is of value both for individuals wishing to start up their own business and for those seeking successful employment or a professional career. This key competence is composed of a number of components (knowledge, skills and attitudes), which can be acquired and learned.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to raise awareness about entrepreneurship among students through an exploration of the theoretical underpinnings of entrepreneurial behaviour. It also aims to promote the importance of an entrepreneurial mindset and to nurture it among students.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain the importance of an entrepreneurial mindset;
- Discuss the components of the entrepreneurship key competence;
- Identify the environmental factors that interact with this key competence to enhance or hinder entrepreneurial behaviour.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Foster one's own entrepreneurial mindset while identifying areas for improvement;
- Approach tasks and challenges in a flexible and entrepreneurial manner.
