The study-unit focuses on how the de Bono methods can be used to develop a systematic approach to improve a product, or to develop radically new product using the following principles:

- Principles of Lateral Thinking to open channels to new ideas and generate new product features.
- Six Thinking Hats to create variations in perspectives and to generate radical approaches to design.
- DATT: Direct Attention Thinking Tools as strategies to sharpen perceptions, to have a broad and inclusive viewpoint, and to understand consequences of innovations.
- Six Value Medals to thoroughly scan for product values, prioritize which values are the most important to pursue, and to ensure that the best values are addressed and maximized.
