Study-Unit Description

CODE IOT3505

TITLE Edward de Bono's Thinking Skills in Primary Education

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT The Edward de Bono Institute for the Design and Development of Thinking

DESCRIPTION The study-unit is designed for B.Ed. (Primary) students and is based on the techniques that have been invented by Professor Edward de Bono. These include the CoRT (Cognitive Research Trust) Programme, the Six Thinking Hats and Lateral Thinking. The de Bono techniques were introduced into state primary schools in Malta in October 2000. Students who follow this study unit will be expected to learn how to use the de Bono techniques in the primary classroom both when teaching thinking skills and when teaching other subjects. They will also learn to use the techniques in other situations, both within and outside the classroom.

Teaching thinking skills to primary school children enables them to be more flexible in their thinking patterns. The skills help children to become more autonomous thinkers, raise their self-esteem and provide them with tools which they can easily use to generate more ideas and to develop their potential for creative thinking.
Students will learn about the positive effects reported in the research conducted by other primary school teachers. Practical interactive sessions will be conducted where students will learn how to use the de Bono Thinking Skills, the Six Thinking Hats and Lateral Thinking in different situations and applied to different subjects in the primary curriculum.
