| DESCRIPTION | This study unit will be offered to PGCE students. B.Educ. students (Y 3 or 4) may choose this unit as an optional credit. The course content, which is based on the thinking skills and techniques which were invented by Professor Edward de Bono, is aimed at student teachers who would like to learn practical methods they can use in the classroom to make their students become more efficient and effective learners. The de Bono thinking skills were introduced through PSD into state primary and secondary schools in October 2000. To prepare for the future, students need a good range of problem solving, communication and practical skills and opportunities to try these out confidently. They need skills for accessing information and experience in debating and reasoning. Learning activities such as creativity and thinking skills that encourage imagination are essential in today's world of constant change. It is the creative skills of both teachers and pupils that enable them to flexibly adapt to change in every area of their lives. Professor Edward de Bono states that 'The teaching of thinking is not the teaching of logic but the teaching of perception.' Objectives By the end of this unit students should learn to use the de Bono thinking techniques, both inside and out of the classroom, and will comprehend a number of issues related to the direct teaching of thinking. Outline The first part of the study unit will deal with the general principles involved in the teaching of thinking. Professor Edward de Bono considers thinking to be a skill, as opposed to a mysterious gift that is available only to the privileged few. A conceptual framework for improving the thinking of both student teachers and their potential students will be provided and interactive workshops will be conducted in order to give student teachers the opportunity to make use of the methodologies. An analysis of the use of the de Bono techniques in local state primary and secondary schools, based on the action research reports compiled by thinking skills teachers that have been published (on http://home.um.edu.mt/create) will follow. Discussions on the use of the de Bono methods within PSD and other subjects will conclude this study unit.
