Work/training placement programme in industry
The University of Malta through DegreePlus is currently in the process of setting up a work experience programme where students can gain experience at a place of work. For the 2009 summer recess, we are launching a 'pilot' of this scheme targeting students from science related areas of study. The plan is that this scheme will eventually be extended to all University students.
There is no such thing as typical work experience, and roles will vary from company to company, reflecting the needs of the organisation and what the student has to offer. The company may keep the student in one area, or move them around a number of different departments. Work may be paid or unpaid, but the University expects the student to gain valuable experience that will help him/her prepare for employment after graduation.
The University will monitor the progress the student, while the company offering the placement is expected to help with giving the student on the job training and keeping and drawing up a checklist of skills gained. The student will also gain significantly from placement and his/her work with the company offering the placement will be officially recognised by the University through the DegreePlus scheme.
By participating in this programme students will:
- Apply concepts and principles of your field of study appropriately to the requirements of the work environment;
- Demonstrate capacity and willingness to undertake a range of duties required for employment in your relative field;
- Recognise the nature of the skills and attitudes required for success in your future career;
- Be exposed to industrial and business environments.
