DESCRIPTION | This Unit will focus on the preparation and delivery of speeches, including speeches to explain a concept, speeches to convince, speeches to entertain and speeches for special occasions. Additionally, the unit will look at nonverbal communication such as body language. You will learn a basic understanding of public speaking and an awareness of other important communication skills so that you can continue to develop effective communication behaviour throughout your life in a variety of contexts. Objectives: Demonstrate ability to: 1. Prepare and deliver a variety of speeches effectively; 2. Conduct research on speech topic; 3. Hold audience attention consistently; 4. Organize speeches effectively; 5. Utilize forms of verbal and visual aids effectively; 6. Successfully use oral language to deliver information or opinions; 7. Deliver speeches with fluency, good eye contact and conversational voice; 8. Improve ability to deliver speech with minimal use of notes. Unit Material: Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. There are no set texts for the unit, though tutors may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. Students will however be assigned a practical task to carry out under the supervision of the unit tutor. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester. Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years. |
