DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed for students from all academic backgrounds and stages of their degree, who wish to cultivate their entrepreneurial flair, leadership skills and creativity. Semester 1 of the Start Up Programme is all about finding your niche and developing a business concept which has the potential to make a big impact on the market and the lives of your customers. JAYE Start Up Teams learn how to recognise their strengths, build a team, research and create an innovative product/service and put their concept to the test.

By the end of this unit students will have sharpened their research, networking and problem solving skills and will be ready to launch their business to the public in the second half of the Start Up programme which they can complete by taking part in Degree Plus Module DGP0120 in Semester 2.

Note: This is a unit offered at post-basic level, and the sessions will therefore not be entirely discipline-specific.

- Hone your market research and analytical skills as part of a team;
- Interact with the general public and learn to respond to their ‘pain points’;

- Enjoy networking opportunities with business professionals;
- Become an active team-player who is skilled in negotiation.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by JAYE Staff, Mentors and guest speakers during the sessions and further resources will be available to students of JAYE’s digital platforms.

Assessment:

In semester 1 JAYE Start Ups complete a Concept Validation Plan as a team which presents their business idea and explains why it is feasible and how it will make an impact on the market and their customers lives. Each Start Up Team is then required to present their work to an independent panel of expert Judges as part of the first phase of the Start Up Competition. The Judges review each team’s work and offer guidance on how the team can to improve and refine their concept.

A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.
