DESCRIPTION This course is being offered as a joint teaching partnership with University of Kiel, under the patronage of the SEA-EU alliance. The course covers current issues and examples of socio-environmental conflicts in coastal and marine areas. Conceptually the class builds on political ecology. The simulation game facilitates the promotion of complex interdisciplinary knowledge in a didactically appealing and practical way. It helps to identify synergies and trade-offs among development and conservation objectives and associated power relations among involved actors in a playful and creative way.

Learning Objectives:

• To gain an awareness of the complexity of socio-environmental conflicts;
• To understand trade-offs and synergies among development and conservation policies;
• To gain awareness about the role that power and knowledge asymmetries play in socio-environmental conflicts;
• To experience conflicts instead of just talking about them;
• To learn more about the different interests of stakeholders;
• To become familiar with planning games, a method increasingly used in environmental and spatial planning.

Learning Outcomes:

To gain the ability to:
• understand the root causes of socio-environmental conflict;
• understand and respect the interests of different stakeholder groups;
• understand the importance of inter- and transdisciplinary knowledge for solving conflict.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit induction material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions. Students may require the use of their own laptop with eduroam connection to connect and operate the simulation game (should IT facilities such as PC desk terminals not be available). Students will need to set up a discord account and have a webcam. In addition, the collaboration tool Concept Board and the video conference tool Zoom will be used.

UM course coordinator would require a sizeable room, with large screen projection and WIFI connection (such as LC 119, Alt, Gateway) where students can simulate the actor role game in spaced out groups (outside physical earshot).

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.

ADDITIONAL NOTES This unit may not be offered if there are an insufficient number of applicants. We require between 8-12 students from each University (so max of 12 from UM and 12 from UK). The language of the course will be in English.
