TITLE Voluntary Work Abroad

DESCRIPTION Participants in DGP0210 may enrol in one of several projects and the final number of participants in the separate projects within this option will be decided upon after receipt of applications and according to the demands for the projects themselves. This unit is coordinated by the Chaplaincy of the University of Malta. This unit is offered in Semesters 1 and 2 as well as during the summer.

Description:

The objective of the ‘voluntary work’ stream is to sustain the ‘voluntary’ spirit that also instils values in participants that go beyond those that they encounter in other areas in their lives. It aims to promote voluntary work during the participants’ time at University. This seeks to give participants the opportunity to involve themselves in a voluntary work project in order to achieve:

• People and social skills;
• Team work skills;
• Ability to plan and manage small scale projects;
• Skills to help participants analyse social;
• Realities in other countries;
• Experience which makes participants more employable in the future.

Content:

Working within a project with an established organization doing voluntary work abroad with any of the categories mentioned hereunder:

• Working with children;
• Working with young people;
• Working with the elderly;
• Working with refugees;
• Working with persons experiencing illness;
• Working with persons experiencing psychological or mental health difficulties;
• Working with disabled persons;
• Pro-environmental initiatives;
• Community Work.

Learning Outcomes:

By participating in this programme you will:

1. Improve your team work and social skills;
2. Plan and manage small scale projects;
3. Become more aware of social realities abroad;
4. Gain experience which makes you more employable in the future.

Training Session/s:

Students are required to be present at a one hour briefing session at the start of the voluntary work project. If additional training is necessary, due to the specific requirements of the organization, then the participant would be expected to attend.

Report:

The student will be required to log in the details, dates, place and work carried out during his/her work abroad.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES This unit may not be offered if there are an insufficient number of applicants.
