DESCRIPTION This unit is being offered in collaboration with the Malta Paralympic Committee, the national governing body responsible for sport for persons with physical impairments, known as ‘Para Sport’ with the support of the Malta Medical Students Association and the Malta Health Students Association.

Through this unit, students will gain both theoretical and practical experience relating to Para Sport and aimed at integrating Para Sport as an intrinsic element of holistic patient care and rehabilitation. This unit is also intended to allow participants to gain first-hand insight into the benefits and social impact of Para Sport through the outreach and awareness activities forming part of this unit.

Topics explored include:
- Introduction to Para Sport
- The role and functions of the International Paralympic Committee and the Malta Paralympic Committee
- Para Sport in Malta
- Classification of athletes according to the type and degree of physical impairment
- Benefits of Para Sport
- Integrating Para Sport into holistic patient care and rehabilitation
- Athlete insight from local Para Athletes
- Practical insight from the Malta Paralympic Committee.

Learning Objectives:

To gain and raise awareness of Para Sport and its benefits.

To gain an understanding of:
- The role and functions of the Malta Paralympic Committee (MPC);
- The role and functions of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC);
- The IPC Athlete Classification System;
- Opportunities in Para Sport in Malta;
- Benefits of Para Sport (physical and mental well-being, as well as individual empowerment and social impact).

Volunteering with the Malta Paralympic Committee as part of its outreach and educational initiatives, aimed at:
- Giving guidance and support to individuals with a congenital physical impairment, or who have suffered a traumatic incident resulting in a physical impairment (ex. amputation);
- To create a collaborative network between the MPC and the medical and healthcare community;
- To develop local expertise in Para Sport and Para Athlete classification.

Learning Outcomes:

To gain the ability to:
- Understand the types of Para Sport and their benefits to persons physical impairments;
- Identify and understand different types and degrees of physical impairment and suggesting a suitable Para Sport;
- Understand the medical aspects of the IPC Athlete Classification System;
- Develop a system of holistic patient care and rehabilitation through the integration of Para Sport in a patient’s care plan.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions, including:
- Presentations
- International Paralympic Committee handbooks / guidelines
- Demonstrations / Videos
- Athlete Q&As.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.
