CODE DGP0401

TITLE Ab Initio Lingua Latina 2

UM LEVEL 00 - Mod Pre-Tert, Foundation, Proficiency & DegreePlus

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS Not Applicable

DEPARTMENT Degree Plus Programme

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended for students who have completed ab Initio Lingua Latina or have a very basic knowledge of Latin. It will enable them to explore selected passages of Latin poetry and prose while confirming and developing the knowledge of grammar necessary to appreciate such texts. The aim of the Unit is to develop an ability to respond to language with intelligence and sensitivity – in particular the Latin language in all its richness and beauty.

Learning Outcomes:

Students, by the end of the Unit, will have brushed against the great names in Roman literature – Virgil, Cicero, Catullus, Caesar, Ovid etc. – and tasted the sublime art of translating authors whose words have rendered them immortal. They would also have acquired the rudiments of a skill which can be put to very practical use, particularly in the local context.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. There are no set texts for the unit, though tutors may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further.
