DESCRIPTION This study-unit is geared for students who wish to learn some basic Chinese and who would like to know China better via the cultural awareness that they get through a study of the basics of the language. The student limit is that of twenty since this guarantees individual attention. This unit is meant for absolute beginners of the basics of the Chinese language and for those who want to obtain the relevant cultural awareness of Chinese society. Multi-media teaching materials will be used. Participants will learn the everyday Chinese language from native speakers, and they will be given informal assignments for communication.

Learning Objectives:

• to teach everyday Chinese to students and to introduce them to the basic characteristics of the Chinese language;
• to enhance students' sensitivity to the cultural elements in the language, including style, and social dos and don’ts;
• to provide the basic knowledge of the Chinese characters and to help students appreciate the artistic elements in them.

Unit Material:

The tutors will provide the appropriate didactic material in class. There are no set texts for the unit, though tutors may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. Students will however be encouraged to communicate with Chinese individuals in Malta for language practice and to understand better the Chinese culture. Regular attendance of lectures is required to ensure that students get a complete picture of the basics of the Chinese language and culture, and to participate in group work.
