DESCRIPTION This study-unit is for students who wish to learn about and to experience the brush arts through calligraphy. The student limit is that of ten since only this can guarantee the necessary individual attention. This is a unit offered to absolute beginners of Chinese calligraphy and painting. Sessions include the introduction, appreciation and experience of brush calligraphy and painting. The Confucius Institute will provide the necessary didactic tools which students need to use in class.

Learning Objectives:

• To introduce students to the art of the composing Chinese characters and to teach them some practical Chinese characters;
• To enhance students' awareness of the different styles of Chinese calligraphy and to guide them to appreciate the arts of the brush, strokes, as well as the composition of the characters;
• To provide knowledge of Chinese calligraphy, painting and seals, and to guide students to appreciate the practices common to various forms of brush arts used in Chinese calligraphy;
• To give students the chance to try practising Chinese calligraphy with the brush.

Unit Material:

The tutors will provide the appropriate didactic material in class. There are no set texts for this study-unit, though tutors may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. Students will however be encouraged to practising Chinese calligraphy and painting. Those students who will produce outstanding pieces will have their work exhibited in the appropriate venues to be chosen by the Confucius Institute.
