• To acquire an understanding of the linguistic structure of Sanskrit;
• To read, appreciate and make a personal response to selected passages of Sanskrit literature;
• To acquire some understanding of the civilization within which one of the richest literatures in the world was produced;
• To develop a sensitive and intelligent approach to language by looking at other Indo-European languages such as English in relation to a language of very different structure, and by observing the influence of Sanskrit on English;
• To broaden the outlook of students by introducing them to a culture very different from our Christian civilization and very different from the European culture of today;
• To deepen interest and experience by considering also social, linguistic and ethical issues which emerge from the above.
