DESCRIPTION This unit is for students with no prior knowledge of Sanskrit. The study-unit will allow students to become familiar with the Sanskrit Devanagari script and to translate phrases as well as whole passages into English.

Learning Objectives:

• To acquire an understanding of the linguistic structure of Sanskrit;
• To read, appreciate and make a personal response to selected passages of Sanskrit literature;
• To acquire some understanding of the civilization within which one of the richest literatures in the world was produced;
• To develop a sensitive and intelligent approach to language by looking at other Indo-European languages such as English in relation to a language of very different structure, and by observing the influence of Sanskrit on English;
• To broaden the outlook of students by introducing them to a culture very different from our Christian civilization and very different from the European culture of today;
• To deepen interest and experience by considering also social, linguistic and ethical issues which emerge from the above.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. This will include a Glossary of Sanskrit terms as well as Invocations and Mantras in Sanskrit/English.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES This unit may not be offered if there are an insufficient number of applicants.
