DESCRIPTION | In this unit, students shall explore the foundations of the Western literary canon, noting how these works of literature were influenced by other cultures and their impact on subsequent literature. Special attention shall be paid to Epic, Drama and Lyric Poetry. Learning Objectives: • Apply literary terminology to epic, drama, and poetry; • Recognize the main elements of different literary genres and assess their significance; • Place authors and literary texts in their cultural and historical context; • Engage with and respond orally to a wide range of literary texts. Learning Outcomes: • Demonstrate a broad understanding of literature and appreciate the role that historical context plays in the creation and interpretation of literary works; • Engage questions of justice, value, spirituality, and meaning raised by literary texts; • Acknowledge the influence of the Western canon on world literature, art and cinema. Unit Material: Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory. Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years. |
