DEPARTMENT Degree Plus Programme

DESCRIPTION This unit is intended for beginners who wish to learn the basic theory of music, and for students who already have basic knowledge of music theory and wish to improve their skills. The course also offers practice in aural (ear) training, a requisite for students who want to read music fluently to become proficient musicians. The ultimate aim of the course is to serve as a foundation for the student who wishes to start learning a musical instrument of his/her choice.

Delivery of lessons will combine a theoretical/practical approach with easy-to-understand explanations of the basic concepts, and will involve participation by the students in aural training exercises that are intended to make the music lessons more enjoyable. This is a unit offered at basic level, and serves as an introductory course to the second unit, Music Theory 2.

Learning Objectives:

• To introduce students to the basic theory of music;
• To enhance students' sensitivity to listening to music;
• To provide an introduction to music appreciation;
