DESCRIPTION In film and television, genres are important because they create expectations. ‘Genre’ is an unwritten agreement that screenwriters have with the audience. In other words, each film genre creates its own emotion and/or set of expectations in the audience’s mind.

Although most mainstream films are genre hybrids, it is very important for screenwriters to understand genre conventions and how they impact different elements of a cinematic story, namely: iconography, story structure, character development, world, conflict, theme, and resolution.

This unit introduces screenwriters to these conventions and how they impact the creation and the execution of a cinematic story.

The syllabus also takes into account the historical development of film genres and how these genres are received and appreciated by the audience.

Learning Objectives:

- Gain an in-depth understanding of the film genre conventions and codes-how to use them, or break them, in the creation and execution of your screenplay;
- Identify a variety of screenplay/film genres and the codes and conventions associated with them (iconography, story structure, character development, world, conflict, theme, and resolution);
- Meet the expectations of the audience;
- Gain skills to put a twist on familiar themes.

Unit Material:

There are no set texts for the unit, though the tutor may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further.
