DESCRIPTION This eight-week unit is for students who wish experience the practice of mindful meditation. The group will not be larger than 20 students, which make individual guidance more feasible.

The programme is based on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), This is an international programme that sets to assist people who want to use their own resources to respond more skillfully, to stress and normal difficulties of life. The practice of mindfulness is accessible, universal and can be practically integrated into your everyday life.

When we focus our minds on the present moment, we are aware of our thoughts, feelings and actions without attaching judgment to them. It can help us to embrace reality and the present moment, instead of jumping to the past or to the future. Intentional, present-moment awareness, developed through mindfulness meditation practices, helps us experience whatever is happening in our life as it unfolds with curiosity, non-judging attention, and compassion for ourselves and others.

Several studies with college students suggest that the practice of mindfulness leads to decreases in stress and anxiety, improvements in concentration and attention, and increases in self-awareness, compassion and overall emotional well-being. Mindfulness is often used as one aspect of treatment for a range of issues, such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, binge eating disorder, chronic pain and cancer.

Learning Objectives:

• To introduce students to the practice of mindfulness mediation;
• To learn mindfulness based ways of coping with stress and anxiety;
• To experience the different ways of practicing mindful everyday living.

Unit Material:

Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutors during the sessions. There are no set texts for the unit, though tutors may recommend appropriate manuals to students who would like to take their work in this area further.

A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.
