DESCRIPTION This unit shall enable students to become better thinkers, with a focus on creative and critical thinking.

Creative thinking involves coming up with new ideas that can lead to creative projects and innovation. Creativity is a skill and, just like any other skill, it can be nurtured and taught. Everyone has the potential to improve their creativity, but becoming an expert creative thinker requires instruction and practice. This unit shall include interactive sessions to enhance creativity through the application and practice of lateral thinking tools and other thinking techniques.

Critical thinking involves questioning, evaluating, making judgments, finding connections and categorising information rather than accepting it at face value. We are constantly bombarded by thousands of messages telling us what to do or not to do, what to believe or not to believe. Our overexposure to these messages has turned many of us into passive receivers of information. However, not all information we receive is equally reliable or valuable. This unit shall also include sessions on how to think critically about the information we receive, how to be aware of vested interests while not being blinded by our own biases.

This unit is of value because students who learn how to think creatively and critically often produce work of better quality and go on to enhance their employment prospects, as the demand for individuals who are able to generate ideas and have a critical outlook on life is growing, both locally and overseas.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this study-unit, students shall be able to:
• apply critical thinking skills in their decision making process;
• apply creative thinking tools to organise their thinking and generate ideas;
• be more reflective and aware of their actions and decisions.

Assessment:

In keeping with the spirit of DegreePlus, there is no formal assessment associated with the unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester.

Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years.

Unit Material:

The required materials for this unit will be provided by the tutors via the VLE.
