DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers the basics of oral pathology, medicine and surgery. It will focus on the aetiology and features of tooth anomalies, tooth surface loss features and oral lesions, common oral infections, differing features of benign and malignant lesions and their significance, causes and local management of xerostomia, basic knowledge of common causes of facial pain and relevance of temporomandibular joint disorders to patient care. An ability to recognise changes from normal in oral tissues and seek appropriate advice.

In addition the student will be exposed to legislation and regulations relating to dental radiography and ionizing radiation and its effect on tissues. The study-unit also prepares dental hygiene students with a theoretical and practical knowledge of the pharmacokinetics of local anaesthesia and its clinical use during management of patients.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit provides a thorough understanding of normal appearance of oral tissues and the deviations from normal to pathological. It will also provide a basic knowledge of local anaesthesia techniques as well as principles of dental radiography.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the constituents of local anaesthetic agents;
- Describe the appearance and causes pathological conditions of the oral tissues and teeth;
- Describe the effects of pathological conditions on the mouth;
- Discuss the effects of ionising radiation and understanding of hazards involved in dental radiography;
- Discuss the protective measures for patient and operator in radiography quality awareness in dental radiography.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Carry out safe practice of local infiltration techniques (included in Clinical Practice II and Clinical Practice III);
- Identify anatomical features and common pathology visible on dental radiographs;
- Apply the principles of processing of dental radiography and faults that may occur;
