DESCRIPTION | This study-unit gives basic knowledge on the development of the dentition, diagnosis and management of dental disease and correction of growth anomalies in young patients. This study-unit covers assessment of the Child Patient including Psychological Assessment and Behaviour Management Techniques, Local Anaesthesia and Management of Carious and Discoloured Teeth is covered as well as the Management of Medically Compromised Children. A Paediatric logbook will need to show the execution of a minimum: • 8 fissure sealants • 4 preventive resin restorations • 2 Class II amalgam filling restorations • 2 Class II composite resin restorations • 1 pulpotomy in a primary molar carried out clinically on child patients. Study-unit Aims: The aims of the study-unit are as follows: • Be able to diagnose orthodontic problems and formulate a basic treatment plan. • Be able to construct a simple removable orthodontic appliance. • Be able to manage simple techniques in paediatric and special needs patients. • Carry out basic intra-coronal restorations in the child patient. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Explain how to obtain and record a comprehensive medical, social, behavioral and dental history from a child patient/parent. • Explain how to obtain and record information about diet, oral hygiene and other dental health related behaviours. • Explain how to complete an extra and intra-oral examination. • Discuss the use of radiographs. • Describe methods of detection of dental disease in the child patient. • Discuss the concept of the risk assessment process. • Discuss behavioural aspects of child development and the aetiology. • Report the assessment and treatment of dental anxiety and phobias. • Explain behaviour management of children. • Formulate a treatment plan for a child patient with due regard to the child’s social, psychological and physical development. • Discuss treatment options for a child patient. • Explain a treatment plan. • List the properties and limitations of dental materials. • Describe the principles of endodontic treatment techniques involved in the management of pathology of the pulp and peri-radicular tissues in the primary dentition. • Report the aetiology, assessment and treatment of the discoloured dentition. • List the principles of local anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry. • Describe sedation techniques including inhalational sedation in clinical practice. • Explain the main medical disorders found in medically compromised child dental patients and the aspects of general medicine. • Discuss surgery that may impinge on dental treatment or the effect dental treatment may have on them. • Explain the physiological and anatomical principles of normal growth and development of the face, jaws and occlusion. • Describe the physiological and anatomical mechanisms of tooth movement and principles of Orthodontic retention. • List the principles of Orthodontic radiography including Cephalometry. • Discuss the principles of Case Assessment, Appliance Design and Extraction Patterns. • Explain the aetiology of Class 1 and 2 malocclusions. • List the principles of treatment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Carry out a thorough clinical examination of the child patient. • Carry out a basic orthodontic examination. • Show competency at interpreting a diet analysis sheet/diary to assist in treatment planning and the delivery of oral hygiene instruction. • Demonstrate the necessary communication skills while simplifying the treatment plan. • Properly select the appropriate materials in clinical practice. • Use appropriate materials in clinical practice. • Demonstrate simple interceptive techniques. • Perform stainless steel crowns. • Carry out the following procedures in the child patient by the end of the Second Semester:     - 8 Fissure sealants     - 4 Preventive resin restorations     - 2 Class II amalgam filling restorations     - 2 Class II composite resin restorations     - 1 Pulpotomy in a primary molar carried out clinically on child patients.
