DESCRIPTION This study-unit covers the teaching in paediatric dentistry and orthodontics.

The study-unit discusses the clinical management of specific dental malocclusions, including principles of anchorage, functional appliances, orthognathic surgery and principles of stability and retention. Further teaching includes orthodontic diagnosis, preventive techniques and management of malocclusions and treatment of emergency presentations.The child dental health component will address preventive and interceptive procedures, paediatric oral medicine and surgery including cleft lip and palate cases and treatment of missing incisor cases.

Study-unit Aims:

- Be able to diagnose orthodontic problems and formulate a treatment plan.
- Be able to diagnose dental and oral problems in patients under the age of 16 years and to formulate a treatment plan accordingly.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

Child Dental Health

By the end of the study-unit the student will be expected to have:
- Knowledge of the range of preventive/interceptive procedures in the orthodontic /paedodontic interface. The ability to identify the pertinent features in a child or adolescent relating to potential orthodontic problems.
- Knowledge of soft tissue lesions and disorders of the oral cavity in the child patient. Their diagnosis, aetiology, investigations required and management including when to refer. Knowledge of the causes of infection, mechanisms and routes of spread of infection and the principles of management of infections in the head and neck region. Particular reference to pyogenic oral infections and indications for referral.
- An understanding of the functions of the dental surgeon in a multidisciplinary cleft lip/palate team. The management of a cleft lip/palate patient.
- Knowledge and list the principles of local anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry.
- Describe sedation techniques including inhalational sedation in clinical practice.
- Explain the main medical disorders found in medically compromised child dental patients and the aspects of general medicine.

Orthodontics

By the end of the study-unit the student will be expected to be:
- Competent in managing limited developmental or acquired dento-alveolar, growth-related and functional abnormalities of the primary, mixed and permanent dentition.
- Competent in diagnosing orthodontic treatment need and be familiar with contemporary treatment techniques.
- Competent to design, insert and adjust space maintainers and design, insert and adjust active removable appliances to move a single tooth or correct a crossbite, to treat simple crowded cases by means of extractions and tooth retraction.
- Competent to identify pernicious oral habits that may exacerbate malocclusion, and prevent their consequences through patient education and training and appliance therapy, as needed.
- Familiar with the principles of treatment of dento-facial anomalies including the common orthodontic/maxillofacial procedures involved.
- Competent in managing appropriately all forms of orthodontic emergency, including referral when necessary.
- Discuss surgery that may impinge on dental treatment or the effect dental treatment may have on them.
- Explain the physiological and anatomical principles of normal growth and development of the face, jaws and occlusion.
- Describe the physiological and anatomical mechanisms of tooth movement and principles of Orthodontic retention.
- List the principles of Orthodontic radiography including Cephalometry.
- Discuss the principles of Case Assessment, Appliance Design and Extraction Patterns.
- Explain the aetiology of Class 1 and 2 malocclusions.
- List the principles of treatment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss sedation techniques including inhalational sedation in clinical practice.
- Discuss the issue of child abuse, knowledge of the spectrum of oro-facial injuries in child abuse and the role of the general practitioner in recognising and reacting to suspected abuse.
- Describe the range of diabilities that a dental patient may posibly present with and the dental care indicated.
- Discuss the management of the first permanent molar in terms of advanced caries, ectopic eruption and moalr incisor hipoplasia.
- Describe the treatment stability and retention of Class I, Class II and Class III malocculsions.
- Discuss the principles of Fixed appliance therapy, and orthognathic surgery.

ADDITIONAL NOTES A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for CDO4134 and DNS4133.

Co-requisite Study-unit: CDO4034

Please note that a pass in all assessment components is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded.

Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
