| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit explores the theory related to acrylic removable partial denture fabrication. It introduces students to the clinical and laboratory challenges of partial denture prosthodontics. Clinical topics include: assessment of the partially edentuluous patient, impression techniques, jaw registration records, tooth selection and setting up, development of occlusal schemes for partial dentures, trial dentures, provision of dentures and maintenance of partial dentures. In addition the student will receive the theory supporting the laboratory procedures that pertain to acrylic partial dentures. Surveying and blocking out of cast models, along with the use of wrought wire clasps will be discussed. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to provide the student with an in-depth theoretical knowledge of acrylic partial denture prosthodontics from a clinical and dental laboratory perspective, in order to appreciate and understand the challenges in providing and maintaining partial dentures. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the sequencing of all the clinical and laboratory steps involved in fabricating and maintaining acrylic partial dentures. - Discuss the different special trays that can be constructed for impression procedures of partial dentures. - Discuss jaw relation record procedures for partial dentures. - Discuss dental surveyors and their role in partial denture fabrication. - Discuss tooth selection procedures and tooth set up for partial dentures. - Discuss different occlusal schemes for partial dentures. - Comprehend the importance of trial dentures prior to completion of partial dentures. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the challenges in providing partial dentures. - Interpret correctly the laboratory prescription provided by the dentist. - Communicate with the prescribing dentist the laboratory limitations associated with a partially edentulous case and suggest appropriate laboratory techniques. - Organize the sequencing of all the laboratory steps involved in fabricating and maintaining acrylic partial dentures. - Identify special trays that are used in fabrication of partial dentures. - Identify the alternative jaw relation record procedures for partially edentulous patients. - Identify teeth that are appropriate for the patient's needs. - Administer different occlusal schemes for partial dentures and setting up denture teeth. - Discuss procedures associated with partial denture maintenance. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | A pass in this study-unit is required before registering for ORC2800. Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. |
