DESCRIPTION This study-unit presents fixed prosthodontics as a treatment option to restore missing teeth with conventional bridgework as well as tissue integrated prostheses. The student is taken through all the necessary clinical and laboratory steps involved to become competent in this field.

The student will be introduced to the construction of the various components making up bridges including retainers, pontics and connectors, according to the design and planning of the bridge as requested by the clinic. The use of wax and non residual wax for construction is also covered, including investing techniques and casting using induction casting.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to prepare the student to:
- Deliver multi-unit temporary prostheses.
- Deliver single tooth implant supported final prostheses in metal alloy or porcelain fused to metal alloy.
- Deliver multi-unit final prostheses in metal alloy or porcelain fused to metal alloy.
- Understand the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the fabrication of multi-unit temporary prostheses.
- Discuss the fabrication of single unit implant supported final prostheses in the various dental materials available and the available techniques.
- Deliver multi-unit final prostheses in metal alloy or porcelain fused to metal alloy.
- Discuss the importance of occlusion when new fixed prostheses are introduced in the mouth.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Construct temporary bridges.
- Construct a complete implant supported single unit prosthesis.
- Construct a porcelain fused to metal alloy fixed prosthesis.
- Carve wax bridges in preparation for scanning and milling.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Attendance to scheduled sessions, inclusive of lectures/tutorials, practical, laboratory and clinical components is compulsory. Students who do not attend at least 90% of the scheduled sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.
