| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to familiarise the student with the basic principles of statistics as applicable to dentistry. Students will be taught how to describe and present data, the description of distributions and have knowledge of sample size, sampling techniques and normal distribution. They will also be familiar with the analysis of data, correlation and linear progression, probability, parametric, non-parametric statistical tests and meta analysis. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the study-unit the student should have knowledge of: • The difference is between descriptive and inferential statistics • The different measurement scales • How to describe a sample and how to summarize the data collected using measures of central tendency and measures of spread • The basic principles of a normal distribution • Estimates and inferences from sample to population • Comparison of samples • The use of non parametric tests • The analysis of relationships using the correlation of coefficient • The concept of probability • Clinical measurement in epidemiological research • Meta-analysis Reading List: Statistics without tears: An Introduction for Non-Mathematicians.
