DESCRIPTION This study-unit will outline the theoretical, clinical and laboratory basis of conservative dentistry, complete denture fabrication and patient management. It provides the basis for acquisition of the clinical expertise required for the rehabilitation of the mouth.

Learning Outcomes:

Conservative Dentistry:

By the end of the study unit the student should have good knowledge of :

• Aetiology and classification of carious lesions, periodontal disease and other tooth pathology, clinical examination, notification of teeth, diagnosis of carious lesions as well as the basic principles involved in the restoration of carious teeth.

• Introduction to clinical operative techniques and materials used in restorative dentistry, including local anaesthesia.
o Armamentarium for restorative dentistry
o Basic principles of cavity preparation
o Preparation of occlusal, interproximal and cervical cavities
o Preparation of minimal cavities

• The materials and techniques used for the restoration to function of vital and non vital teeth with currently acceptable and available intra-coronal plastic restorative materials with due consideration to the concept of oral health.

• Have knowledge of and practice in the techniques used for removal of materials which accumulate on teeth.

Prosthetic Dentistry

At the end of the study unitc students should be competent in:

1. Use of dental materials in the various steps leading to the fabrication of complete dentures.
2. Application of knowledge of the anatomy of the edentulous ridges.
3. Application of knowledge of the consequences of tooth loss and oral changes with aging.
4. Impression taking.
5. Jaw registration records.
6. Selection and setting up of teeth.
7. Insertion and maintenance of complete dentures.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Students must complete the following before being allowed to sit for the Final Assessment of this study-unit.

Prosthodontics

Must have built up 1 F/F in the laboratory.


IMPORTANT

Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled clinical or phantom head sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.

Please note that a pass in all assessment components is obligatory for an overall pass mark to be awarded.
