DESCRIPTION This study-unit will cover the factors determining oral health and the most effective way of preventing oral diseases and reducing inequalities. This study-unit encompasses Oral Health Care Systems and the associated Remuneration Systems. Students are introduced to the principles of Dental Public Health and General Preventive Strategies including the use of Fluorides and Public Health Education. The formation of Dental Plaque and its relationship to Dental Caries and Periodontal Disease is covered in some detail.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit the student should have knowledge of:

• The core elements of dental public health;
• Dental epidemiology and understand the principles of measuring dental disease;
• The key messages in oral health education;
• The key principles of oral health promotion;
• The practical approach to oral health promotion;
• Critical appraisal of an article in a scientific journal;
• How fluoride works in the prevention of dental caries and be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of each mode of delivery;
• The different components of a heath care system;
• Describe the range of information needed in planning dental services;
• Preventive and health promotion approaches appropriate for the prevention of dental caries periodontal disease oral cancer and traumatic dental injuries.

In addition, the student should acquire competence in:

• Critically outlining the principal sources of evidence on the relationship between sugars consumption and caries development
• Ways of reducing sugar consumption on an individual and population level
