| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will give intermediate knowledge on the theoretical, clinical and laboratory basis of conservative dentistry, partial removable and fixed denture fabrication and patient management. It build on the knowledge previously acquired and provides further opportunity for acquisition of the clinical expertise required for the rehabilitation of the mouth. Learning Outcomes: Conservative Dentistry By the end of the study unit the student should be competent in the use of : • The materials and techniques used to replace missing intraoral hard and soft tissues when indicated and appropriate with tissue borne complete dentures. • The materials and techniques used for the restoration to function of vital and non vital teeth with currently acceptable and available intra-coronal plastic restorative materials with due consideration to the concept of oral health. o Basic properties of dental materials o Liners and bases o Glass ionomer cement o Resin composites o Bonding to enamel and dentine o Hybrid materials o Dental Amalgam • The materials and techniques used for endodontic treatment of single and multi rooted teeth. • The student should also be competent in the practice of techniques used for removal of materials which accumulate on teeth. Periodontology By the end of the study unit, the student should have acquired competence in: • Theory relating to periodontal diseases; • Clinical aspects of periodontal disease; • Surgical procedures in periodontology. Prosthetic Dentistry Removable Partial Dentures At the end of the study unit students should be competent in: • Use of dental materials in the various steps leading to the fabrication of partial dentures; • Changes in the jaw bones after extraction of teeth; • Immediate Dentures; • Overdentures; • Interim partial dentures; • Cast dentures; • Impression taking; • Jaw registration records; • Selection and setting up of teeth; • Insertion and maintenance of partial dentures. Fixed Partial Dentures At the end of this study unit the students should be competent in: • Planning treatment for patients with fixed partial dentures; • Discussing materials used in the fabrication of fixed partial dentures; • Basic principles of tooth preparation; • Preparation of teeth for crowns. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | Students must complete the following before being allowed to sit for the Final Assessment of this study-unit. Prosthodontics Must have finished 3 more F/F cases than DNS2001, 4P/- or -/P, 1 C/C and one Immediate denture case. Conservation 20 AF /Composite, 2 RCT on single rooted teeth at extirpation stage. Periodontology 7 treated cases; Your presentation cases must be chosen by the end of this Study Unit. IMPORTANT Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled clinical or phantom head sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions: • obtain a mark of at least 45% in the Written Examination; • obtain an overall pass in the Practical Components; and • obtain an overall pass in the Yearly Clinical Performance* and Clinical Assessments. * The Yearly Clinical Performance mark is an average of all the clinical work completed throughout the year |
