| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit gives basic knowledge on the development of the dentition, diagnosis and management of dental disease and correction of growth anomalies in young patients. This study-unit covers assessment of the Child Patient including Psychological Assessment and Behaviour Management Techniques, Local Anaesthesia and Management of Carious and Discoloured Teeth is covered as well as the Management of Medically Compromised Children. Also covered are the principles of Growth and Development of the Face and Jaws and Treatment Planning including Radiographic Assessment. The Principles of Tooth Movement and the Manufacture of Orthodontic Appliances is covered in detail as well as treatment approaches to the different classes of Malocclusion. Learning Outcomes: Child Dental Health During this year the student will acquire basic knowledge of Child Dental Health, specifically: • The principles of obtaining and recording a comprehensive medical, social, behavioural and dental history from a child patient/parent and of obtaining information about diet, oral hygiene and other dental health related behaviours; • Completing an extra and intra-oral examination including the use of radiographs; • Methods of detection of dental disease in the child patient; • The concept of the risk assessment process; • Behavioural aspects of child development and the aetiology, assessment and treatment of dental anxiety and phobias; • Behaviour management of children; • The ability to formulate a treatment plan for a child patient with due regard to the child’s social, psychological and physical development; • The ability to discuss treatment options for a child patient and explain a treatment plan demonstrating the necessary communication skills; • Dental materials – their properties and limitations - that determines the proper selection and use of appropriate materials in clinical practice; • The principles of fluoride therapy and fissure sealing; • The principles of endodontic treatment techniques involved the management of pathology of the pulp and peri-radicular tissues in the primary dentition; • Preformed stainless steel crowns; • The aetiology, assessment and treatment of the discoloured dentition; • The principles of local anaesthesia in paediatric dentistry; • Knowledge of the main medical disorders found in medically compromised child dental patients and the aspects of general medicine and surgery that may impinge on dental treatment or the effect dental treatment may have on them. In addition, the student will acquire: • Competency at interpreting a diet analysis sheet/diary to assist in treatment planning and the delivery of oral hygiene instruction; • The competency to restore primary teeth in a child. Orthodontics During this study-unit the student will acquire knowledge of Orthodontics and orthodontic techniques, specifically: • The physiological and anatomical principles of normal growth and development of the face, jaws and occlusion; • The physiological and anatomical mechanisms of tooth movement and principles of Orthodontic retention; • The principles of Orthodontic radiography including Cephalometry; • The principles of Case Assessment, Appliance Design and Extraction Patterns; • Simple interceptive techniques; • The aetiology of Class 1 and 2 malocclusions and the principles of treatment. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | Students must complete 8 fissure sealants before being allowed to sit for the Final Assessment of this study-unit. IMPORTANT Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled clinical or phantom head sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions: • obtain an overall pass in the Practical Components; and • obtain a mark of at least 45% in the Written Examination. |
