DESCRIPTION In this study-unit the student is instructed on advanced conservative and prosthetic techniques with reference to emerging areas of interest in the field. Topics discussed in the previous years are revised holistically so that the student may merge the different techniques required to rehabilitate a patient. This may involve a combination of restorative, fixed and removable prosthetic procedures. The main emphasis of this course is clinical.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit the student should be competent in the use of :

• The materials and techniques used to replace missing intraoral hard and soft tissues when indicated and appropriate with tissue borne complete dentures, as well with removable tissue or tooth borne partial dentures;
• The materials and techniques used for the restoration to function of vital and non vital teeth with currently acceptable and available intra-coronal and extra-coronal restorative materials with due consideration to the concept of oral health;
• The materials and techniques used for endodontic treatment of single and multi rooted teeth:
- Endodontic Diagnosis
- Treatment of vital and non-vital teeth
- Isolation, Access, preparation of the root canal
- Materials used in Endodontics
- Techniques of obturation.

Prosthetic Dentistry

At the end of the study unit the student should:

• Be competent in replacing missing teeth when indicated and appropriate with fixed or removable partial dentures (tooth or tissue borne);
• Have knowledge of when implants are indicated and provided or to refer as appropriate.

RULES/CONDITIONS Before TAKING THIS UNIT YOU MUST TAKE DNS2001 AND TAKE DNS3001

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES Students must complete the following before being allowed to sit for the final assessment of this study-unit:

Prosthodontics: 2 F/F cases, 4P/- or -/P, 1 C/C and one Immediate denture case more than DNS3001. 6 units Crown Preparation at preparation stage. 2 Post and Core.

Conservation: 80 AF/Composite. 5 RCT finished (root canal obturated) more than DNS3001.

Periodontology: 15 treated cases more than DNS3001.


IMPORTANT

Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled clinical or phantom head sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below.

In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions:
• obtain an overall pass in the Written Examination and Case Study;
• obtain an overall pass in the Practical Components; and
• obtain an overall pass in the Yearly Clinical Performance* and Clinical Assessment.

*The Yearly Clinical Performance mark is an average of all the clinical work completed throughout the year
