| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to deliver further knowledge in Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology. It builds on knowledge previously acquired to add to the range of clinical skills required for overall competence. This study-unit covers Cysts of the jaws and head and neck region, Odontogenic tumours and fibro-osseous lesions, Lesions of the Oral Mucosa, Oral Radiology, Oral Surgical Techniques. Learning Outcomes: A. Cysts of the jaws and head and neck region By the end of this study-unit the student should: - Be familiar with the classification of cysts of the jaws; - Have knowledge of current views on their pathogenesis; - Be familiar with their clinical, radiological and histopathological features; - Be familiar with the principles of management and expected behaviour. B. Odontogenic tumours and fibro-osseous lesions During this study-unit the student will gain knowledge of odontogenic tumours, fibro-osseous lesions and of other bone tumours. By the end of this study unit the student should: - Be familiar with the classification of odontogenic tumours and of fibro-osseous lesions; - Have knowledge of current views on their pathogenesis and outline their clinical, radiological and histopathological features; - Be familiar with the principles of management and expected behaviour; - Have knowledge of the more common bone tumours that occur in the jaws. C. Lesions of the oral mucosa In this study-unit the student will learn about the more common lesions that occur in the oral mucosa. By the end the student should: - Have knowledge of the clinical presentations of oral mucosal diseases and the investigations required to reach a diagnosis; - Have knowledge of principles of pathology, immunology and microbiology relevant to oral mucosal disease; - Have knowledge of the management of oral mucosal lesions including when to refer; - Be competent at recognising and managing at a primary care level disorders of the oral mucosa, including malignant and potentially malignant lesions; - Have knowledge of the pathology of malignancy and the principles of cancer therapy relevant to oral malignancy. D. Oral Diagnosis By the end of the study-unit the student should: - Be able to take a full medical and dental history competently and confidently; - Have gained full competence in carrying out a comprehensive examination of the head and neck; - Use the information gathered to list differential diagnoses; - Be able to identify the need of further tests and to order these tests in order to reach a precise diagnosis; - Formulate a treatment plan. E. Oral Radiology Diagnostic Radiology. By the end of this study-unit the student should have achieved competence in: - Principles and practice of interpretation; - Guidelines on making a radiological differential diagnosis; - Reporting on films- methods and conventions; - Fundamentals of radiological anatomy:     - Teeth and periodontium;     - Jaws and facial bones;     - Soft tissue shadows and air spaces; - Pathology:     - Definition of fundamental terms;     - Methods of describing radiological terms;     - Developmental abnormalities;     - Cysts of the jaws;     - Differential diagnosis of radiolucent lesions;     - Tumours of the jaws;     - Fibro-osseous lesions;     - Diseases of the paranasal sinuses. F. Oral Surgery During this study-unit the student will acquire further knowledge of more advanced techniques in oral surgery. Specifically: - Basic principles of oral surgery, including flap design and elevation, biopsies (excisional and incisional); - Management of odontogenic infections; - Management of complicated extractions and impacted teeth; - Surgical management of periapical pathology; - Surgical orthodontics; - Surgical management of odontogenic cysts; - Management of oro-facial pain; - Management of maxillary sinus disorders; - Management of Temporomandibular joint disorders. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | 20 Extractions by the end of the Fourth Year. IMPORTANT Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled clinical or phantom head sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components mentioned below. In order for students to be awarded an overall pass in the study-unit, they need to satisfy the following conditions: • obtain a mark of at least 45% in the Written Examination; and • obtain an overall pass in the Clinical Assessment, Oral Examination and the Yearly Clinical Performance*. * The Yearly Clinical Performance mark is an average of all the clinical work completed throughout the year. |
