DESCRIPTION During this year the student will acquire further clinical skills through clinical practice and attendance at consultant clinics and tutorials, building on the knowledge acquired in the previous years. The emphasis of this study unit is to increase competence through clinical exposure. Subjects taught will include preventive and interceptive procedures, paediatric oral medicine and surgery including cleft lip and palate cases and treatment of missing incisor cases. Further teaching includes orthodontic diagnosis, preventive techniques and management of malocclusions and treatment of emergency presentations.

Learning Outcomes:

Child Dental Health

By the end of the study unit the student will be expected to have:

• Knowledge of the range of preventive/interceptive procedures in the orthodontic /paedodontic interface. The ability to identify the pertinent features in a child or adolescent relating to potential orthodontic problems;
• Knowledge of soft tissue lesions and disorders of the oral cavity in the child patient. Their diagnosis, aetiology, investigations required and management including when to refer. Knowledge of the causes of infection, mechanisms and routes of spread of infection and the principles of management of infections in the head and neck region. Particular reference to pyogenic oral infections and indications for referral;
• An understanding of the functions of the dental surgeon in a multidisciplinary cleft lip/palate team. The management of a cleft lip/palate patient;
• Knowledge and competence in the treatment planning and management of a case of a missing central incisor in a child or adolescent incorporating consideration for their expected growth and development;
• Competent at diagnosing dental anomalies with knowledge of their prevalence and management options;
• Competent at diagnosing dental erosion and the ability to advice regarding preventive measures and treatment options according to severity of tooth surface loss.

Orthodontics

By the end of the study-unit the student will be expected to be:

• Competent in managing limited developmental or acquired dento-alveolar, growth-related and functional abnormalities of the primary, mixed and permanent dentition;
• Competent in diagnosing orthodontic treatment need and be familiar with contemporary treatment techniques;
• Competent to design, insert and adjust space maintainers and design, insert and adjust active removable appliances to move a single tooth or correct a crossbite, to treat simple crowded cases by means of extractions and tooth retraction;
• Competent to identify pernicious oral habits that may exacerbate malocclusion, and prevent their consequences through patient education and training and appliance therapy, as needed;
• Familiar with the principles of treatment of dento-facial anomalies including the common orthodontic/maxillofacial procedures involved;
• Competent in managing appropriately all forms of orthodontic emergency, including referral when necessary.

ADDITIONAL NOTES By the end of this study-unit the student must present proof that he/she has satisfactorily carried out the following procedures before being allowed to sit for the Final Examination. Work completed by the student in previous study-units is admissible.

Requirements for Orthodontics

A) MINIMUM Clinical Treatment requirements:
2 Functional appliances started and finished.
3 Anterior crossbite cases started and finished.
2 Posterior crossbite cases started and finished.

All these cases must have full orthodontic records and must be presented at the end of the year. They MUST have all relevant radiographs, photographs and study models.

B) By the end of this year the student MUST have accumulated a MINIMUM OF 30 diagnostic cases, which will be graded and entered into a student logbook.

ONE presentation case for Final examination.
This must be presented in the format specified in the CDHO section of the Faculty website https://www.um.edu.mt/ds/dentalsurgery/divisions/cdho

Requirements for Child Dental Health

One (1) trauma case of calcium hydroxide dressing placement to stimulate calcific barrier formation.

Clinical requirements for restoring the primary dentition
10 restorations in amalgam or composite
2 vital pulpotomies
2 pulpectomies

Prevention
15 fissure sealants on permanent molars
10 Preventive resin restorations

Exam presentation case

The exam case may be either a trauma case which you have treated from day one (or soon after) of injury or else a complex paediatric case which have been approved by one or your child dental health lecturers. An example of this would be a young child with multiple carious lesions requiring pulpal treatment, restorations and fissure sealants, amelogenesis imperfecta or molar incisors the appropriate radiographs have been taken.


IMPORTANT

Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled clinical or phantom head sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components.

* Submission of the Clinical Report is compulsory.
** The Yearly Clinical Performance mark is an average of all the clinical work completed throughout the year.
