| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed to deliver further knowledge in Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology. It builds on knowledge previously acquired to add to the range of clinical skills required for overall competence. Subjects taught include Salivary Gland Disorders, Occupational and Iatrogenic Disorders, Developmental Disorders of the Face and Facial Syndromes. Subjects also include the related Oral Radiology and Oral Surgical techniques. Learning Outcomes: A. Salivary gland disorders During this study-unit the student will acquire knowledge of the more common non-neoplastic salivary gland disorders as well as the more common salivary gland tumours. By the end, the student should: - Be familiar with the more common non-neoplastic major and minor salivary gland conditions; - Have knowledge of the clinical presentations of salivary gland diseases and the investigations required to reach a diagnosis; - Have knowledge of principles of pathology, immunology and microbiology relevant to salivary gland disease; - Have knowledge of the management of salivary gland lesions including when to refer; - Have knowledge of the more common salivary gland tumours, including clinical features of major and minor salivary gland neoplasms and their management at primary care level as well as principles of management and prognosis. B. Occupational and iatrogenic disorders By the end of this study-unit the student should: - Be competent in taking a full history in order to gather the necessary information to establish a diagnosis of an occupational or iatrogenic disorder; - Be competent in recognising occupational and iatrogenic disorders; - Have knowledge of their oral manifestations and of their management including when to refer; - Be familiar with medico-legal issues related to occupational and iatrogenic disorders; - Have knowledge of principles of prevention of these disorders. C. Developmental disorders of the face and facial syndromes By the end of this study-unit the student should: - Have knowledge of the more common developmental disorders of the face and facial syndromes; - Be familiar with their management and implications for dental treatment. D. Oral Radiology By the end of this study-unit the student should have achieved competence in Diagnostic Radiology: - Malignant diseases of the jaws; - Trauma including the facial bones; - Disorders of the salivary glands and sialography. E. Oral Surgery During this study-unit the student will be exposed to more advanced techniques in oral surgery. Specifically the student will be: - Competent in the surgical treatment of buried roots, root resection and impacted teeth; - Familiar with the management of oral squamous cell carcinomas and odontogenic tumours; - Familiar with the management of facial fractures; - Familiar with Orthognathic surgical techniques. F. Oral Diagnosis By the end of this study-unit the student should: - Be able to take a full medical and dental history and a comprehensive examination of the head and neck competently and confidently; - Gather confidently the information to list differential diagnoses for the case presented; - Be able to identify the need of further tests and to order these tests in order to reach a precise diagnosis and to interpret the results; - Formulate a treatment plan appropriate for the patient. G. Pharmacotherapy - Explain the management of a condition in the oral mucosa. - Explain the pharmacological management used in maxillofacial surgical procedures. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | By the end of this study-unit the student must present proof that he/she has satisfactorily carried out the following procedures before being allowed to sit for the Final Assessment of this study-unit. Work completed by the student in previous study-units is admissible. 1. Dental Extractions: 50 dental extractions of canine or more posterior teeth. 2. Clerking of Minor Oral Surgery: 10 Minor Oral Surgery (Local Anesthesia) 4 Surgical Procedures under General Anesthesia (including details of the anesthesia). 3. Case Report; including discussion on: 1 case Oral Surgery/ 1 case Oral Medicine IMPORTANT Students who do not attend at least 92% of the scheduled clinical or phantom head sessions will not be allowed to sit for any of the assessment components. * The Clinical Report is compulsory as per standards. ** The Yearly Clinical Performance mark is an average of all the clinical work completed throughout the year. |
