| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit covers the major institutions of the EU: the Commission, Council, and the European Parliament. It will also deal with the European Court of Justice from the point of view of its set-up, staff, function, and also the Court’s role as a “Constitutional court” a law and policy-maker of the EU. The study unit analysis the Economic and Social Committee, the COREPER, the European Council, the Court of Auditors, the ECB, the European Investment Bank and European Political Cooperation. The study-unit analyses the legal basis, structure and function of the institutions, together with the nature, sources and distinguishing features of EU legislation, decision-making procedure and processes, including the adoption of the budget and external relations. This study-unit will also introduce the student to the main theories of integration which will serve as a constant backdrop against which the intricate institutional set-up of the Union is discussed and explained. Learning Outcomes: This unit has been designed to help the students understand the legal issues behind the institutional balance of the EU. The students should appreciate the role that the institutions play in the formulation of EU law and how they continue to evolve to meet the present day expectations of the EU. The unit is studied from a critical perspective where students are not only requested to familiarize themselves with the laws and case law but to study these laws by attempting to constructively identify their deficiencies and to explore possible solutions how to overcome such problems. While the unit focuses on the institutions, the students would also be able to appreciate the legal tools that help towards the build up of European integration.
