| DESCRIPTION | Students need to check the relevant programme of studies to verify whether it is compulsory or elective or whether (for non-EDRC students) it is available as an optional credit. The aim of this study-unit is to familiarise students with the basic concepts in the theories of international relations. This enables them to better comprehend courses taught in later years dealing with the external relations of the European Union and especially the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) as well as with the interactions between the member states of the EU themselves. The course covers the origin of the discipline of international relations and the links with comparative politics. Attention focuses on some of the burning issues in international relations today, as listed below. Students are expected to work on their own, the textbook suggested here is just the bare minimum expected and students’ personal initiative is valued. Topics Covered in the Study-unit: 1. The Globalisation of World Politics 2. Realism 3. Liberalism 4. Neo-Realism and Neo-Liberalism 5. Terrorism and Globalisation 6. Human Rights in International Relations 7. Humanitarian Intervention 8. The role of Culture in World Politics 9. Nuclear Proliferation Students are also advised to complement the texts indicated above with additional readings from IR journals available in the main library such as the Review of International Studies, Cambridge University Press, and International Affairs. Suggested Textbooks: - Baylis John and Smith Steve, The Globalisation of World Politics: An Introduction to International Relations, Oxford University Press; |
