DESCRIPTION The aim of this study-unit is to give students an understanding of the rationale behind and the issues falling within the ambit of the social policy agenda of the European Union. By the end of the study-unit students should have a sound understanding of how key issues are addressed by the EU, more specifically in the EU2020. Such key issues include employment (and unemployment), free movement of workers, fundamental rights and non-discrimination, occupational health and safety, pensions, gender issues and labour law. The study-unit will also focus on the dynamics leading to the formulation of the EU's social policy agenda, perpetually striving to strike a balance between the economic and social spheres. The study-unit will also include an analysis of the EU2020's targets and objectives, with special reference to Malta. The study-unit will conclude with a thorough discussion on the future of social policy and the welfare state.
